My Experience at BIR Music Festival 2023: A Weekend of Disappointment
When my friends and I heard about the BIR Music Festival 2023, we were ecstatic. The vibrant and picturesque town of Bir Billing, nestled in the Himalayas, seemed like the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable musical experience. With promises of great performances, fun activities, and a chance to escape the mundane, we were all in.
Convincing my five friends to join me took some effort, but the anticipation of a fantastic weekend made it worthwhile. We shelled out 10,000 rupees each, which included accommodation in a six-bed dorm at Whoopers Hostel for June 9th and 10th – though I ended up with a bed in a windowless room. The ticket price didn't even cover transportation. Despite these inconveniences, our excitement knew no bounds.
Day 1: The Arrival and First Impressions
Our journey to Bir Billing was filled with eager chatter and high hopes. As we approached the festival grounds, our excitement was palpable. The initial setup looked promising – stages being prepared, vendors setting up their shops, and the general buzz of a festival coming to life. The atmosphere was infectious.
However, our enthusiasm was quickly tempered by our accommodations. The six-bed dorm at Whoopers Hostel was cramped and lacked windows, making it feel claustrophobic. Dining arrangements were basic, and hygiene left much to be desired. Nonetheless, we decided to make the best of it, hoping that the festival's experiences would outweigh these initial setbacks.
The Cracks Begin to Show
As the day progressed, we began to notice several issues. Communication at the event site was nonexistent. There was a meticulously planned event list, but without any updates or guidance, it was nearly impossible to follow. Long lines for check-in, confusion about event schedules, and a general lack of organization started to chip away at our initial excitement.
Interacting with fellow festival-goers revealed that we were not alone in our frustrations. Many shared their concerns about the management and the rising apprehension about whether these issues were mere hiccups or indicative of a poorly organized event.
A Night of Discontent
The evening's performances were a mixed bag. While the Indian Ocean concert was a bright spot, offering a fantastic musical experience, other performances were plagued by technical difficulties and sound problems.
The lack of adequate lighting and seating further dampened the mood. Our excitement was turning into disappointment as we realized that the festival was not living up to the expectations we had paid for.
Day 2: Escalating Frustrations
Waking up on the second day, we hoped for an improvement, but our frustrations only escalated. The issues from the first day persisted and even worsened. Mismanagement, lack of communication, and unfulfilled promises were rampant.
Activities planned for the day were either delayed or canceled without any notice, and the heat made it impossible to attend daytime events, with limited shade available.
One particularly frustrating experience was the realization that, despite our expensive tickets, everyone was able to enter the festival without proper checking. It felt like we had been made fools of for paying for something that was freely accessible.
Additionally, alcohol was prohibitively expensive, and outside liquor was not allowed, making it clear that the event was more about profit than providing a good experience.
A Glimmer of Hope and Ultimate Letdown
Despite the mounting frustrations, there were brief moments that gave us hope. The tattoo store and face painting booths were good, and the pop-up shops, especially Captain Gogo’s, were interesting and well-executed.
These small pockets of enjoyment, however, were not enough to salvage the overall experience.
The second day was so disappointing that we decided to take a break from the festival and go on a small trek to a hidden waterfall. This impromptu adventure turned out to be the highlight of our trip.
We paid a guide 500 rupees to take us there, and the serene beauty of the waterfall provided a much-needed escape from the chaos of the festival. It was a reminder of why we had come to Bir in the first place – for the natural beauty and tranquility.
Lessons Learned From Bir Music Festival
The BIR Music Festival 2023 was a significant letdown. From the poor organization and lack of communication to the unhygienic food and inadequate accommodations, the experience was far from what we had hoped for. However, it did offer some valuable lessons.
Managing expectations is crucial when attending such events, especially those with high operational activities. It’s essential to research thoroughly, read reviews, and be aware of potential risks before investing time and money. They could've charged slightly more to provide better experience.
While the festival itself was disappointing, the trip to Bir Billing wasn't a total loss. The sightseeing, paragliding, and trek to the waterfall were memorable experiences that somewhat salvaged our trip.
In the end, if I were to attend the BIR Music Festival again, I would approach it differently. I’d book my own accommodation and plan to attend only the evening concerts, bypassing the disorganization and enjoying the parts of Bir that truly make it special.
